Who is a typical Gamut School student?

The typical student at The Gamut School is a middle schooler (generally grades 5–8, ages 9–14) who identifies with emotional challenges and benefits from a therapeutic academic environment with a focus on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Our students usually require support for their socioemotional needs alongside rigorous academics. The school is especially designed for children who respond positively to a setting where their emotional well-being is supported while maintaining academic rigor. Some of our students may struggle with depression, anxiety, school refusal, phobias and other emotional challenges.

Our students are bright learners. Our learners may also have identified learning challenges, such as ADHD, executive functioning struggles, language-based, non-verbal, and specific learning difficulties (including Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Dyscalculia), or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We provide support for ASD (Level 1) students who don’t require significant 1:1 support and/or in-school ABA therapy and students with mild to moderate learning disabilities.

Key characteristics of a typical Gamut School student include:

– Middle school age (starting with a 5th/6th grade cohort in the 2025–26 opening year, expanding up to 8th grade).

– Emotional or social challenges—students may struggle in traditional academic settings due to these factors and seek a more supportive, therapeutic environment.

– Need for small class sizes—the school caps class sizes at 6–8 students, maintaining a low student-to-teacher ratio for individualized attention.

– Appreciation for hands-on, experiential learning, including project-based modules and electives suited to their interests.

– Benefit from structured socioemotional learning, specifically Comprehensive-School Based DBT, which is also embedded throughout their day.

– Desire for an educational setting that emphasizes both academic excellence and personal growth, not requiring them to “fail first” before receiving specialized support
